Is Islam Compatible With Psychology?

Islamic Psychology

The pen has been lifted from three; for the sleeping person until he awakens, for the boy until he becomes a young man and for the mentally insane until he regains sanity.

[at-Tirmidhi]

If we look back at Islamic History, we see the first large-scale psychiatric hospital built by Muslims in the year 705 AD (86 AH) in Baghdad, Iraq. Shortly after this more were built such as in Cairo.

During the Golden Age of Islam, advancements were continuously being made in a variety of medical fields. Outstanding minds like Mohamed Al-Razi and Abu Zayd al-Balkhi were studying illnesses and making progress in the understanding and advancement of psychology alongside other medical fields. We were utilizing treatments that resembled early cognitive behavioral therapy and psychoanalysis years before these were known as western advancements.

In The Age of Islamophobia, Why Reverts Are Leaving Islam

“The overwhelming emotional state you will see in any revert group — online and offline— is one of isolation and lack of acceptance. It is neither the lifestyle nor their beliefs.  Islam does have a high rate of reverts, with a majority of women, accepting the faith. Yet, many ignore the darkness that eclipses this beautiful fact. Many reverts become apostates. This is what we hear from imams who pastor to converts, we hear this in revert chat groups. ”

Originally posted to PsychCentral. Edited here for Islamic content.

It’s good to have goals, big and small. Perhaps you want to write a book (I do)  , lose weight, pray with more sincerity or attend the mosque more often . Some goals are more difficult than others. People that make the resolution to drop 20lbs understand just how hard it is to maintain some of our goals after the initial momentum fades. Our brain is wired to favor routines over change, even if that change is healthier. Lets look at some practical skills to achieve your goals!

How to Calm Someone in Distress

anxietyIslamic PsychologyMental Self-Care

It is a valuable skill to be able to calm someone down when they are upset. Whether in the heat of anger during an argument, assisting family members or even someone experiencing a psychotic episode. All of these situations and many other scenarios benefit when someone understands how to calm someone while also remaining calm themselves. Skills in verbal de-escalation can be effective and potentially save someone’s life dependent on the severity of the situation and their individual emotional concerns.

Childhood Anxiety

anxietyIslamic Psychology

When we think of anxiety we tend to imagine adults, typically ones with a stressful work environment or in difficult life situations. Many people assume that children and adolescents do not really face anxiety and their complaints are just imaginary. Nothing could be further from the truth. The world around us and the pace of life are changing rapidly and many children and adolescents have very real anxiety problems. Actually, anxiety disorder is one of the most common health issues facing adolescents.

Our faith in Allah alongside our lifestyle choices can help our youth to manage their anxiety.

Sexual Harassment Allegations in the Media Triggering Victims

Islamic PsychologyModestySexualityTrauma

A growing number of sexual harassment allegations are currently seen in our media. One allegation has led to another like a domino effect. Some have taken the stance that the sexual harassment allegations are false and these are women attempting to force a feminist narrative while targeting influential men. I argue that sexual harassment allegations in the media can act as psychological triggers for survivors that previously did not speak out due to fear and other mediating factors.

This is not to say that all accusations are factual, we know that someone is innocent until proven guilty.

Gratefulness Impacts Happiness

Islamic PsychologyMental Self-Care

As November continues, we are in a month where we focus on gratitude and giving thanks to those around us.

A time of embracing family and being nostalgic. Gratitude is very much a spiritual benefit that enhances our mood, allows us to take account of our blessings as well as enables us to see hardships as lessons. This type of perspective encourages positivity and a greater quality of life. Simply put, gratefulness impacts happiness. Our perspective is our reality. A grateful perspective is one that helps us on our path of spiritual awakening and appreciation.

and, indeed, We granted this wisdom unto Luqman ,Be grateful unto God-for he who is grateful [unto Him] is but grateful for the good of his own self; whereas he who chooses to be ungrateful [ought to know that], verily, God is self-sufficient, ever to be praised

Quran 31:12

The Psychology of Islamic Modesty

Islamic PsychologyModesty

What is modesty and what does it mean to you?

This is a question I believe all believers need to ask themselves. Modesty is an element found within many religions, it is a characteristic aligning with piety and respect. That is not to say that all who demonstrate modesty are pious, unfortunately, many look the part yet they do not act it. Ultimately, the psychology of Islamic modesty and self-respect are important aspects of Islamic character.

How to Embrace the Power of Prayer

Islamic Psychology

Prayers are a time of reflection and submission to our creator, to Allah (glorified and exalted). We let go of this world, even if only for a minute. In this submission we find calmness, we release our emotions and the power of prayer impacts us. Prayer in itself is a gift, a blessing, a powerful coping skill, it is therapeutic and most importantly; it is an act of worship.

“Indeed, I am Allah . There is no deity except Me, so worship Me and establish prayer for My remembrance” Quran 20:14
